Have you ever....
...met one of those people who never read the fine-print? You know, the type that jump in 'boots and all' without thinking before they leave solid ground? If so, then you've met me.
I had been carefully following Stephanie's Dresden tutorial, freshly printed out (in full colour so I didn't get confused), and propped by the side of my sewing machine guiding my every cut and stitch.
Those little 2 1/2 inch blades were fiddly and my fingers fumbled more than I usually allow them, but I persevered and ended up with 20 sweet blades about 30 minutes later.
But as I got to the part where I'm supposed to sew the 20 blades together, Stephanie's instructions have this to say - "The smaller the blades the fussier they are to work with so here's a 5" blade. I definitely recommend starting with a larger size blade."
Start with the LARGER size??
Yep, that would have been easier. ;-) But I didn't read her instructions, did I.
Thank goodness I was patient and chose to go slow. In the end this is what I created...
Sweet, huh!? I've just found a use for all those 2 1/2 inch strips I save!
I'll work on the centre tonight. Not sure what I'll use...I thought something embroidered or appliqued would be nice, but I'll be printing up Stephanie's extra tutorial for the circle first, and READING it through before I start.
~~~~~~
Finally I found a frame to display Vicki's first "On My Heart" BOM block. You can just see the little Swarovski crystal on the bottom leaf, but it catches the sun in the afternoons. It's hanging above our bed and I just love it!
Have you made a dresden plate block yet?
Hugs
The next day....and something new to make
It's the morning after the night before...and Blossom would like me to say to you all, THANK YOU!!
She sat and read all your comments last night, and was so touched by the well wishes and prayers. She'd like me to share with you a picture of her unofficial 16th present - we couldn't resist buying them yesterday, and she needed new slippers anyway. ;-)
Aren't they gorgeous!?
And a special photo of Blossom and I last night - complete with her choc-fudge brownies. She doesn't do birthday cakes, she prefers the fudge brownies.
So what am I doinng today?
I have printed up Stephanie's Dresden Plate tutorial, chosen the fabrics (Lila Tueller's "Woodland Bloom"), and will finally open the Dresden tool Stephanie sent me! I have not been brave enough to use it yet, but today I'll take courage with leftover chocolate fudge brownies and a strong capuccino, then crack that plastic open and begin....I wonder if I'll get hooked on them like Stephanie is???
Stayed tuned to this spot.
I may have something really lovely to share tomorrow if this works out.
Hugs
Blossom is 15!
It's May 26th here in Australia and the youngest of my brood has awoken as a fresh and beautiful 15 year old!
~~~ Happy Birthday Blossom!! ~~~
She woke this morning to a table of 15 gifts surrounded by 15 pearly balloons....
This is a sweet belcher bracelet from her big bro', and today she buys the first charm for it. She has been waiting for this phone since we her dad bought it a month ago, and the beautiful amber ring as well. She loves jewellery, and the phone is all gold scrolled - very her.
A beautiful glass Lily is a reminder of her favourite flower, and a group of adopted aunties that have prayed for her since she was 6. (bless you all, Auntie Lilies!)
A Spanish course for her longed-for trip to Spain in 2011 for World Youth Day was another reminder to hold on to her dreams.
This is a very old tradition!
Dear friend Vikki posted her a special package too, filled with more things she just loved. Thank you Vikki!
Here she is on the phone to her bestest friend in the whole world, Frances, who lives on the opposite side of the country. Blossom is wearing the cammo pants Frances sent her for her birthday - this was so funny because Blossom wears pink, and is VERY girly. I think there will be some serious payback come Frances next birthday! :-)
Thank you ALL of you for your birthday wishes and prayers. Blossom was overwhelmed with the beautiful comments you left, and so happy.
Now I'd better get out of my Pj's and start MY day with a serious coffee before her birthday Mass.
May your own day be totally wonderful and full of all good things!

15 for 15....
For the first day in a while I have not stitched. It was hard, but with Blossom's birthday just hours away I had a secret plan that needed all day to execute.
She is 15 tomorrow, and what a wonderful 15 years it has been. She is such a beautiful soul, so loving and open, so honest and caring, always a joy and never a burden. We are blessed to call her 'daughter'.
So my plan is to give her 15 special gifts for 15 special years. She knows what a few of the gifts are, but has no idea about the rest. She is in for many surprises in the morning! Some of them were only a couple of dollars, but they mean something, and that's what the "15 for 15" is all about. I made tiny little cards, numbered 1 - 15 so she opens then in order, all with a special message for her relating to the gift and why I chose it. Tomorrow I'll take photos of her with them all so you can see. :-)
If you are a praying woman please offer a pray of blessing on her for the year ahead. This last year has been a hard one for our family and she has borne a lot, but come through with hope and faith, inspiring me always.
~~~~~~
Debbie in Jerusalem has stitched two of my free designs in reverse redwork and I just love them!
If you go to her blog you'll see more reverse redwork embroideries, all of them so lovely.
If you would like to stitch my Camelzz design for yourself you will find the download HERE.
~~~~~~
Have you signed up for the Advent Swap yet? Go and visit Fiona's blog and see what it's all about.
Lots of fun to be had if you join in!

~~~~~~~
Now I must off and begin the dough for Blossom's traditional birthday breakfast - Cinnamon Scrolls. MMMM, YUM!
Cushion all finished...and about Whisper Weft
I had to be so sneaky last night. I was hiding away in my bedroom finishing the cushion for Blossom's birthday and she'd come knocking softly, enquiring, "everything okay, Mum?"....I would open the door just a wee crack and my one revealed eye would meet her two eyes as I responded, "Fine sweetie, off you go now." And I'd wait to hear those soft footsteps pattering back down the hall before heading back to the sewing machine.
I'm so pleased with the final result! I hope she is. :-)
~~~~~~~
A number of people has emailed me about Whisper Weft, wanting to know just what it is.
This is a photo of what I mean...
If your local quilting store does not stock it try Googling 'whisper weft' in your country and see if you can find a local supplier.
~~~~~~~
Well, my husband's flight arrives in just 45 minutes so I'm off to collect him from the airport!
Have a wonderful day!
Remember to smile a lot, you never know who's day you will brighten.
A rainy Saturday, a gift to stitch, and a sneak peek...
It's a very windy and wet 'almost winter' Saturday.
The nicest thing about days like this is being able to close the doors, boil the kettle for lots of hot tea, and stitch. And that's exactly what I'm doing.
It's Blossom's 15th birthday on Tuesday, and as with most 15yo girls she was very clear about the gifts she wanted. They have been purchased (with her) and are safely hidden until the big day, but I also wanted a little surprise for her, so I am using one of my Oopsie Daisy blocks in a cushion cover. The fabrics are from the Sandy Gervais "Celebrate Spring" range from Moda.
This is as much as I have done right now because I have to grab sneaky moments when she's busy and not aware of what I'm doing. She has a 4 hour shift at the Tea Rooms tomorrow so I'll finish it then.
I still have the set of 3 Oopsie Daisies embroidery designs for sale in my etsy shop as a PDF download if you'd like them. :-)
And what else am I stitching?? Hmmmmm.... what do you think?
Just teasing you with a little sneak peek.
Only 8 more sleeps until I share blocks 4 & 5 for your Shabby Roses BOM.
For now, I'm off to make more hot chocolate and count down the hours till hubby arrives home from his trip away - I'm missing him so bad!
Happy Stitching,
Jenny
Shabby Roses BOM - quilt layout plan
Many of you have asked me for yardage on the quilt, and as yet I haven't been able to work that out because I've been busy designing the 12 blocks.
Today I drew the last blocks, traced them, fused the applique on, and added the Whisperweft! Yay!! Great sighs of relief were heard through the house. ;-)
Over the next 7-10 days I'll stitch these blocks and THEN I'll piece the quilt top...and finally you'll have your yardage sizes.
In the meantime here is the layout plan of the finished quilt top.
The finished quilt will measure 50 in x 51 in
There are 12 blocks - six blocks of 6 in x 6 in, and six blocks of 9 in x 6 in
Each square on the above diagram represents 1 inch, so you may be able to work out your own yardage before I do. :-)
If you click on the photo you'll get a much larger view.
My husband will be away this weekend so I'm stocking up on popcorn and DVDs for a marathon stitching session! My hand is much better today, so as long as I don't go lifting heavy things (like saucepans and plates) I should be fine to sew.
Hugs
Jenny
PS: Thank you all for your inspiring and encouraging comments!! If I don't respond via email it's because I've run out of hours in my day, so I just wanted to let you all know, from the bottom of my heart - {{{thank you}}} for being so lovely. You bless me constantly.
Shabby Roses BOM News and some finished Wonky Houses!
It's only 12 days until I share Block 4 with you, but this time there is a little bonus - June is a double block month! You'll be stitching two blocks instead of one. I might share a sneak peek before then....hmmm...you may have to twist my arm. ;-)
The other news is that because there are 12 blocks in the BOM I will be leaving the free downloads for everyone in sets of 3. When Blocks 4 & 5 are released on June 1st I will take down the links to blocks 1,2 &3. So if you need to download the first 3 blocks please do so before then.
Here are the current links for the first 3 blocks whilst they are available.
Block 1 - LOVE
Block 2 - BEAUTY
Block 3 - DREAM
I'm sure you will have fun with the double blocks on June 1st! Last night I finished all the block designs, now to stitch the last few, then I can begin putting the quilt top together. Once I've done that I will share with you the amount of fabrics used to complete the quilt - I'm hoping to share that before the release of block 6 on July 1st.
Remember, you will need 1 yard of the pink tone-on-tone fabric for the 12 embroidered blocks.
~~~~~~
Once again, you ladies have blessed me! Katrin and Marie-Joze sent me photos of their completed Wonky Houses and they are fantastic!! I just had to show you all!

Shabby Roses Bookmark & Alphabet - a gift for you!
Would you believe we have spent the last few hours in complete darkness!?
The hot water system blew up this afternoon which in turn blew the fuse box. We had to wait hours for the power company to come fix everything, and all this right near dinner time.
As the sun set and the darkness fell I headed off to buy fish and chips for dinner - when I came home my husband had the table set with candles so the four of us ate a very beautiful meal together. With no sign of the power being restored any time soon we went down along the beach for a walk in the black night, the sky resplendent in a cloak of stars. What a special evening we had after all!
When we arrived back home the security light came on and we stepped back into 'normal' life once again. Don't you love those unplanned times when the world switches off and you just enjoy being with the people you love?
So - the computer is back on again and I have put the Shabby Roses bookmark and alphabet into a pdf file for all of you. It's a simple design and project - a wonderful gift for any occasion, but best of all it's quick to make! :-)

Go HERE to download the pattern.
Let me know if you like the Shabby Roses alphabet - I've been doodling with it for weeks now! :-)

Just chatting about this and that...
Thanks so much to everyone for your concern over my hand! I am truly humbled once again by the kindness and compassion of fellow stitchers world-wide. What a lovely community of friends you have become to me!
Well, I thought I'd show you how I chose to display block 2 of Vicki's BOM! You can get a better picture of the fabrics used in the block here, and because they are not cotton I chose to frame the block instead of using it in a quilt or hanging. Unfortunately the photo does not capture the twinkling of the Swarovski crystal on the butterfly as the light catches the frame, but it is so pretty here in my living room!

If you haven't started Vicki's BOM yet, make sure you go to her blog and have a look - the blocks are so pretty!! She has a giveaway at the moment too, so be sure and enter!
Speaking of Vicki, I came across this cute bag she had published in Homespun a few issues back. Did you know that Vicki has had quite a number of her designs published in various Australian craft magazines? She's such a talent! I wonder what she'll design next? She's just begun to sell her patterns and you can purchase them through her etsy store.
I was busy this weekend with a secret project. Here is the tiniest peek...but if you want to see the rest you'll have to wait a few months. It is to published later this year in Country Threads magazine!!
Did you know that you can download gorgeous wallpapers from the Country Threads website? This has been my wallpaper for months now, and I love it so much I can't imagine ever tiring of it. There is definitely a Shabby Roses look and feel about it, don't you think? Suits me perfectly! ;-)
The lovely Deb posted me my missing issue of Homespun a few weeks back and as promised in my original post to whomever could help me procure that issue, I made a little something for her. I wasn't going to show anyone, but she asked if I'd be putting a photo on my blog, so here it is. The Shabby Roses bookmark!
Would you like me to share this design with you? I could do an alphabet too, then you could stitch any name on it.
I'd better go and take my almost 15yo daughter out for a capuccino. She's been working hard doing some autumn cleaning through the house for me and there's nothing like coffee by the beach with your best girlfriend. :-)
Have fun stitching!!

Denise's Wonky Houses!
Don't you just love how Denise has finished her Wonky Houses? She stitched the blocks in redwork, then set the blocks in this beautiful wallhanging as a gift for her mother.
Denise, what a beautiful gift for her, and what a gift to me. To see how others can take an idea I have and make it their own is so special! I love it. :-)

This weekend I have been busy working on a new project, but wouldn't you know it, my hand is hurting again because the tendonitis has returned. I'll finish this project in the next couple of days and then I'll go read a book so I can stop myself from picking up a threaded needle for a day or so. Well, that's the plan. ;-)
I wish you could hear my family in the background - they keep singing the winning song from the Eurovision Song Festival, "Fairytale". Congratulations Norway!! :-)
Did you choose the winner?

Amanda's Wonky House Wallhanging
Have you finished all 4 Wonky Houses blocks yet?
Amanda has not only finished the blocks, but finished the wallhanging! Isn't it gorgeous in the purples and blues!?
What colours will you be using in your wallhanging?
Or will you make something different like Bev's funky cushion?
Today I am going to clean up all the mess I've made this last week with stitcheries, templates, patterns, fabrics and threads! This is the downside of sewing...at some point you have to clean and tidy. ;-)
Maybe I should design some little fairies who love to run around behind me straightening my mess....
