Addressing those stitching questions, and a giveaway...

(the new blog face is still under construction, but we're almost there!! Thanks Keren!)
I get asked a lot about doing a series of tutorials on embroidery stitches, and even though it can seem like a great idea, I have this thing about re-inventing the wheel. You see there are some great tutes already out there, and one of the best is Helen Stubbings' "Stitched Sunday" series.
Visit HERE and scroll through her "Stitched Sunday" posts for step by step photos of a huge variety of embroidery stitches, plus you'll have a project at the end!
Now, because I am a visual person, and I learn by seeing things done, I understand why many of you desire to learn the same way. Just the other day after dropping Blossom at work I found these great books teaching basic styles of embroidery...

...and I thought to myself, "You could offer these as a giveaway!". So I bought them for just that purpose!

 Lookee here, a wee elephant...
 ...and lots more inside.

Would you like to win a copy for yourself? Just leave ONE comment below.
I'll post the books anywhere in the world, but draw the line at Mars. ;-)
Two winners will be drawn on Sunday 21st, the day after Kezzie's wedding.
Only five more sleeps until my big girl changes her name from Miss Reynolds to Mrs Allen. \o/
It's all VERY exciting!!
*****

In the sewing room I have been busy finishing the basting, quilting, and binding of "Promises & Borders". Oh my, its lovely...
I've decided that the blocks for this quilt will remain on my blog as a permanent FREE gift to all my readers. The Lord blessed us with those promises, and He gave me the creative skill to design and stitch the borders, so 'to Him be the glory' always and forever.
*****
My time lately has also been spent in the kitchen. Winding down my magazine means more time for me to prepare the foods that we love; the foods that nourish our bodies, and bring smiles and good health to my family.
I love doing the morning prep! Today I have Chia Coconut Pudding 'gelling'...
All those little chia seeds become transparent by the end of the day, reminding me of the sago/tapioca puddings I used to make.
I also have blueberries thawing to serve with it, and a bowl of falafel mix ready to cook into balls and wrap with salad and raita inside fresh chapati breads when Blossom comes home from work...
Lastly, I made a Banana & Date loaf...
...but it's still in the oven.
If there is any left tomorrow I'll show you a pic, but knowing how popular it is with Mr E and Blossom I wouldn't count on it. ;-)
*****

My sewing room blind died months ago and ever since I've had it hand rolled and pinned so I could have light in there, but now the fierce tropical sun has arrived for an early summer I have had to avoid the room as much as possible.
Until last Thursday!! The odd jobs man finally got permission from our landlord to replace the blind, and it's a venetian this time. I have a working sewing room again!!
Did I mention that I use it for household planning as well??
Friday was planning day for menus, grocery shopping, bill scheduling, and Bible study.
I even changed the room around and was surprised that it worked so well. More light, more room - perfect.
Have a lovely week. Do something wonderfully unexpected for a loved one, 'just because'...

You cook up a storm! It all looks delicious. I am one of those people that tried the Sunday Stitchery...... and now I am completely hooked. Hi Jenny, I haven't seen Helen's Stitched Sunday, but I used to use Sharon Boggan's stitch dictionary on the net. I'm not sure if it's still around, but it was great to have as a reference. I'm going to have a look at Stitched Sunday, even though I'm reasonably proficient with most stitches, I always work on the assumption that we can always learn something.
Hope the wedding goes well.

Hello Jenny. It always brigthens my day to see a posting from you arrive to my in-box, and your blog is always a pleasure to read.

Love your sewing room - so bright and airy, which must make it an enjoyable place to craft (I know I sometimes like to nap in my sewing room just for that reason!)

A couple of weeks ago I attended one of Helen Stubbing's Colourque workshops and, now that I've done the tracing, colouring and sealing of my project it needs to be finished off with the embroidery around the edges and for the stems, etc. Not having really done any embroidery before I think that the books you are offering may provide some confidence - after all, anything the 'master embroiderer' recommends must be very good!

Your blog upgrade is looking lovely - I love that your elephant is taking centre stage... Embroidery is my creative pursuit of choice but since returning to work from Maternity leave I have had to stop going to my Embroidery/Fibre Arts group (they meet on 1 of my 2 work days) and I am missing the guidance as I learn my new skill. I am finding blogs, books and magazines are my valuable source of inspiration, guidance and advice as I continue to stitch and learn.

What a wonderful post. So glad to see you a little more 'centred' - hope the wedding goes well. What a blessing daughters are!

Speaking of Helen Stubbings, I was fortunate enough to take a stitchery class with her recently. She came over West for a few workshops. Such a very nice lady. And I got to see her "Sunday Stitching" in person. She has lovely work. So I'm finally learning to stitch a little. Hopefully I can build on my stitch knowledge and develop a smoother hand. If that makes sense in some weird way. Too late for me to think straight. Have a fabulous week. All the best to your eldest and her soon-to-be hubby.

I have thinking about getting back into doing hand-embroidery. I haven't done it for years and really need a refresh on old skills and some help with all the new stitches I've been seeing. This book looks like just the ticket!

Wish that I could fly over to Australia to sample your creative dishes at dinner time. Thanks for selecting helpful embroidery books for your giveaways. I could use one, as have no idea as to what to get. I have read some of Helen's, but my desktop tower and monitor don't fit in my lap when watching tv! Best wishes from Florida, USA.

Trying again to post - and hoping it takes. Love the look of your new blog. I bought some embroidery floss and am getting ready to foray into hand embroidery. My nieces do it and love your BOM. They are Mennonite and have used some in blocks they make for friendship quilts. I also print off your blog entries for them to read. They don't have internet access. Keep the faith and know there are so many who love and appreciate you and your work!

Oh my, you kept me up late last night.

I was reading the latest magazine last night and was inspired by so many things. I love the projects!

I went to the wedding video and on to John Piper (I think) website and downloaded the marriage book.

Most importantly, I was, as I read your challenges this year, I was moved to reach out to other ladies and form some friendships. I'm in my sixties and happy at home but I need others, too. So I signed up for a challenge at my gym and some of my classmates are joining me!

Thanks.

I agree with you that "Stitched Sunday" is a great way to learn basic stitches. I love your new page design. Enjoy the warmth!! It is Fall here, and it just started raining for the first time since July 1st. We really needed the moisture, but cold and damp is never great fun. Have a wonderful week!!

What a lovely giveaway.
I hope the wedding day is beautiful with weather to match!
How kind of you to leave Promises and Borders on your blog permanently, that is wonderful. I do print them out each month but I have a habit of losing things ( or putting them in a safe place- lol.
I must try the Chia seeds Jenny a lot of people put them in their refrigerator oats for brekky- it helps to thicken them as it is an " uncooked brekky". :D

Wow 158 comments!!! Love the new look of the blog Jenny.

Ondrea said...

Oh my! How are you going to get through all these comments? I love your light and bright room. Just perfect. Funny you should mention Chia seeds looking like sago because I said the same thing to my hubby yesterday morning when the brekkie I had prepared the night before looked the same. It is a yummy breakfast with oats, yogurt, milk fruit etc and chia seeds tha you refrigerate. I hope your daughter's wedding brings lots of sunshine. I am amazed that girls do not keep their maiden names in this day and age. Don't forget to show us all some pics of the wedding and ofcourse, the mother of the bride!
