TUTORIAL - the sweetly bound pincushion...

It's quite easy to make a pincushion like the one I showed you yesterday.

First of all, choose a stitchery, then border it all around with a complimenting fabric the way I did with this month's Postcard's block ...

...OR perhaps feature your embroidered block to one side and fabric to the other as I did with my Spring Bouquet Pincushion.

However you choose to display or border your stitchery, or even if you plan to use a small patchwork block, the simple pincushion tutorial I'm about to share with you will work for any size project you want to make because the steps are all the same. You can tweak them to suit your needs!

I'll show you how I made Spring Bouquet, okay?

I began by making the back of the pincushion.

Do this by laying two same sized pieces of fabric right sides together. You're going to sew the two pieces together across one side, but you will need to leave a 3 inch opening in the middle.

My pincushion is rectangular so the side I'm sewing is a long side. If you were making a square pincushion it could be any of the sides.

I've placed two pins in position to guide my "no go zone', and sewn a 1/4" seam either side of it.

Once stitched, I pressed the seam open.

A piece of the same fabric as I used to make the back of the pincushion was sewn down the right hand side of my stitchery to create the front of my pincushion.

I placed the pincushion front onto some scrap cotton quilt wadding and machined quilted 1/4" outside the seam line...

Next step was to trim the back of the pincushion to the same size as my pincushion front, then pin them together, right sides facing.

Sew around all four sides with a 1/4" seam, and trim away the excess quilt wadding.

Turn right side out, pushing out the corners with a rounded tool, such as large knitting needle or chopstick.

At this point you could choose to stuff your pincushion, stitch the opening closed and be done!

And that's what my plan was at first.
BUT...I love binding.

So I made a length of quilt binding and sewed it all around...

...turned it to the back and slipped stitch in place.

Then I stuffed my pincushion.

And ladder stitched the opening closed.

A satisfied sigh followed soon after.

I'll share another pincushion pattern with you in a day or two, but let me leave you with something special before I sign off now.

I spent the morning with Cully May today.
She's 3 months old this week and she melts my Nana-heart.

hugs

The pin cushion is beautiful (but Cully Mae is beautiful-er!)
I like how you made the opening in the back of the pincushion rather than the side. Makes for a neater finish. Thank you for sharing.
