Happy New Year dear friends!
I pray 2026 is a year that grows us in the best of ways, and that by year's end we can look back and be satisfied with how far we have come in our walk with Jesus, and our God-gifted roles within home and family.
I pray also for our sensibility to keep what is important, enjoyed or needful, whilst having the wisdom to remove what is not. My personal plan through 2026 is to take a spiritual broom, and a physical one, in order to spring clean my life from the inside out, carrying forth only those things that have purpose, delight, and glorify the Lord.
The 2026 Adventure:
At the top of this post you will have seen a new button for 2026, one which I'll add to Adventure 2026 blog posts throughout the year. In previous years I have shared my dislike for NY's resolutions, and that has not changed. One thing of which I am sure, is that life rarely stays the same, and the older I get the more changes occur with each passing year.
This 2026 Adventure challenge is something productive for us to have fun with, and can be easily altered to suit changing circumstances should they occur as the months go by. I hope you'll join in?
Using what we already have on hand has been a huge decision at the back of my mind since 2019 when the Lord laid those very words on my heart and engraved them well so I'd not forget.
Choosing the next project, whether that be with regards to sewing, organising the home, cleaning out the pantry, planting a garden, or reading a book, we can first of all look at what we already have.
In essence, to "use what we already have" means spending nothing (or very little) to achieve a desired outcome, and that's high on my agenda in 2026. As I am now able to sew again (update is further down), I made the decision to have a year long sewing adventure that will not cost me anything but my creative time.
Between Christmas and New Year I went through my sewing room and gathered all my UFO projects together, then all the kits which had been purchased over the past decade and never opened, plus a lovely wool felt kit I won back in 2008 and never made. It would be easy to become quite overwhelmed when all of these things are stacked on the cutting table, but I got quite excited. Being mindful of not burdening myself unnecessarily, I chose eight unfinished projects or unopened kits, and packed them into the bag below.
I am still to choose another four, but that won't be difficult. I should acknowledge that having been dedicated to designing for seventeen years, I don't have an enormous stash of projects and kits yet to make or complete, but I certainly have enough to work on much longer than a year.
Having finally retired from designing last year, there was a great peace in my heart about no longer having to create new embroideries or projects and I actually lay down my embroidery needle for many, many months. After my knee injury in mid-July I rekindled a love for knitting, but then the nerve problem with my arm and hand left me unable to craft anything at all for the last three months. But let's just run forward a bit...
HEALTH UPDATE - I have full health in my arm and hand now! After all the different diagnoses and tests and medications, the actual culprit was a medication I take every year from spring through to early autumn (from September to April here in Australia) as a migraine preventative. The last two years I noticed it gave me a slight tingling in the little finger of my right hand, but that's all. It genuinely helped enormously with stemming the amount of baromtetric migraines during the hot and humid wet season here in the tropics so I was fine with that tingling finger.
But this past September I had a very different issue, with severe nerve pain in my left arm and hand - which I never even associated with the migraine preventative drug. My doctor was great through this, trying everything he could think of to avoid surgery in my arm, and following up on every possible cause or condition, yet all didn't seem right...and then one day in mid December I wondered about that drug, and how this all began when I started taking it as usual in mid September. It's a strong medication (amitriptyline), and I only ever take a low dose as I am highly sensitive to all prescription meds, so to test the theory I weaned off it over two weeks, the same way I always do at the end of each migraine season. The less I took, the more feeling came back in my hand and the less nerve pain in my arm. Within two days of taking that final tiny dose after Christmas, I had full pain-free use of my arm and hand again. Those pills were thrown down the sink and I will never be able to take them again. And I am rejoicing over that!! So thank you for all your prayers - they indeed were heard by the Lord, and He led me to healing.
Back to the Adventure Challenge...
Here's what I thought you may enjoy doing with me through 2026 -
* Place all your UFO projects together
* Place all your unmade/unopened kits together
* Choose 12 kits or UFO projects that excite you, ones you'd enjoy making or completing
* Donate or sell any kits or UFO projects you no longer like or want
For myself, as well as those of you who would like to join in, there's one major stipulation for this Adventure to work as it should.
We must ENJOY it.
It must never become a rigid programme we feel obligated to stay on when life is calling us elsewhere, when illness holds us back, or when we lose the joy. By choosing your twelve UFO projects or kits, you have made a choice to complete what you started, or use what you purchased, and even if you only achieve six finishes in 2026, that's success and I hope you'll feel a rush of personal satisfaction by year's end. By using up what we already have, we who love to create can complete projects that will cost us nothing but time. As I have the projects and kits on hand to use, I will not be straining our tight budget by buying anything, and can simply enjoy time given to sewing.
Each month I will show you the project or kit I intend to work on, and some progress pics along the way. Some of you may have a very large UFO or kit, one that requires more than a month to complete, and I actually have a quilt kit that will need time, but what I intend doing is working on that when my allocated monthly project is done. This way I can probably get a good deal of it done across 2026, but I am not bothered if that particular project runs into next year as well.
Let me know in the comments if you're joining in, and also what UFO projects or kits you're excited to finish or make.
Now I should show you what I have chosen for January...
One is a UFO hand embroidery finish from early last year and only has a small corner to be completed, which is why I have chosen it first, and I'll explain more in a minute...
I think this can be finished in a few days, and that brings me JOY! Then at last it can be framed and hung in the living room.
Now the reason I chose that Japanese hand embroidery for January was because as a quick finish, it will allow me time to cut all the fabrics from the large quilt kit that I will work on all year when smaller monthly projects give me a week or two to spare.
The quilt is called "Dutch Darning Sampler Coverlet" by Judy Newman, and I loved it the first time I lay eyes on it. For many months I ummed and aaahed about buying the kit, and eventually purchased it in 2024. The fabrics in the kit are gorgeous, and that centre block is actually done in cross stitch. Just the thought of starting on this project brings me JOY.
For those in Australia who may want to know, I bought the kit HERE and I think it's still the same price I paid back in 2024.
The ABIGAIL Bible Study
So, now we have the Adventure explained, I wanted to let you know that I have set up a special page on the blog for the Abigail Bible Study, and it is HERE.
I've written the intro there, and will begin the actual study next week. All the notes will be there as I write them during the duration of the study, which will take a few months, so if you miss any sections you only have to go to the Abigail page and scroll down, as everything will be there in order.
There's a button in the blog sidebar as well, if you lose the link. I'm very humbled to learn with you as we dig deep and glean from the life of this remarkable woman.
God bless each and every one of you, and no matter what work the Lord puts your hands to this year, may it glorify Him and bring you joy. I have many plans for homemaking in 2026, but am open to the Lord changing them if it be His will.
Really, all we need follow is His will, then we can be assured of not straying from the right path.

Hi Jenny, I am joining and the study too. My unfinished project is my first patchwork quilt. I am more than half way.... I dont have any kits. I currently need a crochet project as I have lovely summer cottons. I went away from crochet while I had a puppy... still will be a challenge but she sleeps so evenings I should be ok! You didnt mention flooding so this is good news!xxx
ReplyDeleteYou've made so much progress on your quilt! I'm excited to see it finished, and am happy you can return to crochet - and yes, I understand about the crochet and the puppy. ;-) When we got Kelly, I think it was the third or fourth night, and the rug I was working on ended up outside wrapped around a tree and the yarn was everywhere from our couch to the back pool! ;-)
DeleteNo flooding as such, just happy the four submersible pumps have been able to keep the water levels down in the front and back yards. Praise God they work!
I am joining as well. I have a number of unfinished quilts but the one I'd like to finish first would be my "Squircle" quilt. I started it when I first found out I had a serious health issue back around 2016. I stitched each of the 'squircles' onto the neutral charm square while waiting for a test, lab appt, doctor or surgical appt. I had another quilt I actually started & finished during this time - and as soon as I finished it, I gave it to our mechanic to give to his wife (she was getting worse & he didn't expect her to live much longer). She was SO happy, so I was glad for that. But I will admit it gave me a tough moment or two when I realized that His will was for this quilt as I had put SO much of myself into it. This second quilt will be for me, and completely different. I'm very, very glad I gave it to her...and am grateful every morning that I'm alive, well, and that the Lord has blessed in so many ways. The next quilt after that will be a much smaller quilt - where I wrote on simple blocks between pieced blocks simple sayings that spoke to me, including phrases my grandmother used a lot. I'm so glad you organized all this! I'm looking forward to getting into the finer points of Abigail. We just finished up reading Joshua at church, and it was a really good study for me. Wonderful news hearing that you are well again! Best wishes to you & your family! Deb
ReplyDeleteDeb, bless you for following His direction and gifting your quilt to this woman our Father loved too. May He be with you as you work on a quilt just for you, dear one. x
DeleteJennifer-
ReplyDeleteIt is more than wonderful to have you back! I am so pleased to hear that the reason behind your nerve pain has been found! I am also glad you are eager to sew again and have a plan moving forward. Your big quilt sounds and looks amazing. I have issues with starting things and not finishing them. I have at least 6 projects right now that are in process. I am looking forward to joining you on the journey and Abigail is so interesting as well. Welcome back and Praise Jesus for the opportunity to learn from you again. Many blessings to you and your precious family.

Thank you Kristy! It feels good to rekindle a love for sewing, but even lovelier to be doing this with all of you lovely ladies. :-)
DeleteHello Jennifer, I’ll be joining in as well with the Abigail study and the UFOs as I have quite a few!!!!!! I will enjoy working on them each afternoon and think of you and the other ladies taking this challenge. So glad you are well and truely on the mend.
ReplyDeleteBlessings Gail.
Thank you dear Gail. x
DeleteI had already made a plan to not buy crafting supplies this year and work through my wips, none of my present wips have much done on them but I am looking forward to seeing some finishes. My husband has just taken early retirement, partly due to health reasons, so our finances are down. I have always been good at budgeting and now I have to really use those skills and also bring happiness to myself through my crafting.
ReplyDeleteI can appreciate the level of skill it takes as the homemaker to make and follow a budget, especially when income levels change. To be honest, I've always loved doing a budget at the beginning of the year, and I did that this past week. You know where you're heading and the things you need to cut off or change. God bless you Kay!

ReplyDeleteSo glad that you have solved the problem of your sore arm and that you are able to get back to sewing. It looks like you have plenty to work on this year. Your embroidered panel I remember from last year and is gorgeous, it will be lovely to see it finished. The quilt kit looks lovely too. I have already joined in with my challenge group for the year and have 10 projects I plan to work on from stash so will be with you as you work through yours. xx
Actually, Lin, I was inspired last year with your own monthly project plan, so in part you helped me in planning this Adventure. :-)
DeleteI will try the Finishing UFO's challenge, but I have lot, over so many crafts... I did get some embroidery projects finished last year, and felt good about them, so I will use that as an encouragement...
ReplyDeleteOh, what a blessing you found what was causing the nerve pain - I have had several shorter courses of amitriptyline, but thankfully never had any side effects... but I 'hear' you about the migraines.
I am looking forward to the Abigail study, thank you Jennifer.
Blessings
Maxine
Maxine, I should have added in the post that this Adventure could be any crafting project...shall do that next time. I'm so glad you feel encouraged to join in! Aah, migraines...awful things my friend. :-(
DeleteI find it amazing how the Lord works in our hearts....we are a whole ocean apart with me in RSA and way over there😁, yet we have the same purpose....to grow in our faith and use what we have to finish what we started!! I have already started the week before New Year, to gather UFOs, and WIPS and scheduling time each week for those, with a block-a-day crochet in the evening. I am looking forward to your Abigail study. So thankful your hands have healed. Blessings 🌹
ReplyDeleteBless you Muis, and you're right - oceans apart but the Lord brings us together to encourage and grow with. Wonderful!
DeleteI am SO HAPPY that you found the reason for your pain, and have fixed it - what an encouragement you are in the Lord! Looking forward to Abigail, and seeing what you make!
ReplyDeleteAllie, you are the best prayer-partner!! Can you believe we've prayed for each other for 18 years now? And across an ocean too. God is so good to us. xx
DeleteI'm just overjoyed that you have full use of your arm! God is so good to all of us. I'm looking forward to the Abigail study and will be joining you in working thru all of my kits and fabrics I've collected over the years. After the death of my husband 2 years ago, it gave me pause to look at all the things in the house that we both had collected. I've been steadily ridding myself of a lot of it. Part of the realization was that I don't need or want most of it. That goes for my sewing/quilting/cross stitch/embroidery items. I look forward to looking thru it all, sewing some and donating a lot of it.
ReplyDeleteGod bless you and your family!
Mary in FL
Sounds like a good freshening of what you have around you, Mary - keeping what you love and that which matters most. :-)
DeleteFirst, I am SO happy to hear that your arm and hand pain has been resolved! God is good ALL the time! I have been praying that He would heal you.
ReplyDeleteI have been using what I have for quite some time and am happy to join the group! I am also looking forward to the Abigail study. My life has taken a turn lately and so organizing what I have has become more important. Thank you dear Jennifer for the encouragement.
I hope and pray you are doing okay, Karin? I find organising to be a way of clearing mental fog more than anything else. :-)
DeleteGod does work in mysterious ways! I declared to my small group that I have issued a 2026 moratorium on “acquisition.” For a long time I have had a terrible habit of buying more than I can possibly sew or stitch up in the foreseeable future…maybe in this lifetime! All that fabric and those designs were just too gorgeous to pass up! There are so many things I am itching to make and a debilitating fall has made creating very restricted. Physical therapy is helping and I hope to get back to my machine soon. Your plan aligns perfectly with my “moratorium” and will give me the encouragement I need to take stock, organize and prioritize while healing. It is so gratifying to feel that my friend across the miles is spurring me on! Thank you for the Abigail study, as well!
ReplyDeleteDearest Victoria, I genuinely understand where you are coming from. Last year I had two injuries that kept me away from gardening and crafting (two favourite hobbies) for almost six months, and it was hard...but I also learned a lot from the Lord, and patience was a 'big' lesson. ;-) I also learned to focus on the things I 'could' do, rather than lament what I could not, and over time a peaceful joy took over. What a gift. :-)
DeleteOh my goodness…I so needed the UFO project idea! I have an entire cabinet filled with things that have haunted me!
ReplyDeleteI’m so happy your arm has been healed.
Happy New Year
I am so thankful that your arm and hand is healed. I have several UFO'S that I will join in this year with you. I'm excited for the Abigail study! Please pray for me. I have a very bad neck and back. Advanced degenerative disc disease, and osteoarthritis. It is very painful, even after many surgeries, the pain has not improved. It has kept me from making quilts, and is so discouraging. Thank you for saying to just enjoy as I feel I have the encouragement and permission I need to do what I can when I can. God's blessings to you and all of our friends here.
ReplyDeleteHave just prayed for you Tina. {{{hugs}}}
DeleteI will be joining as well. I am excited to get started. My first UFO will be an embroidery quilt with patchwork blocks. Most of the embroidery blocks are done, just the pieced blocks need to be finished. Wish me luck.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Sandy
Sounds like a lovely project, Sandy!
DeleteDearest Jenny, how awesome it is to have you posting again. While I may not always respond, I do enjoy and am challenged by your postings. It is a joy to share with a sister in Christ how he is smoothing the rough edges on my as well. Before I read his word, I ask him to show me what he wants me to see!! It means being open to what it is, which is not always what I want to hear!!. This morning was from Galatians 1:10, wow, I am a people pleaser by nature, yet it is not people I serve or live for! A revelation and reminder that caused my heart to feel sad. I am on board with you, using what I have, I love that we share the gift of crafting that God has given us and the insight the Holy Spirit has laid on us to use what we have. January, I will be making a kit from Shabby Fabrics, Tea for 2. As for the Abigail, I look forward to it and will do along with my BSF study in minor prophets. Many blessings to you, praise God you found what was causing your pain. Cyndi Shaver-California Girl
ReplyDeleteThat is definitely a verse we all should go back to regularly, Cyndi. I wonder if it's mainly women who have this deep seated need to please everyone? Thanks for sharing that today. God bless you!
DeleteHello! So happy you found the reason for your pain, that can be so hard to “fix”. I will be joining the Abigail study, and working on unfinished projects. I am starting by gathering all UFO’s and if knit/crochet and it doesn’t make me happy I will be ripping it out. Then I will assess the remaining projects. I have a few small table runner/placemat projects I’m sewing and I think I will work on them in Jan as I started them most recently so remember what I’m doing!
ReplyDeleteYay!! That's the best way to apporach this adventure. I have personally donated many of my crafting things, fabrics and patterns regularly and it is always liberating. I really only want to keep the things I know I'll enjoy - after all, more years are behind me than in front, so I shall not waste time feeling burdened with 'stuff' I no longer like, need or can use...especially when it comes to sewing.
DeleteGood Morning Jenny,
ReplyDeleteOur awesome God knows just how to encourage and send others to journey with oneself on something He has placed within one's heart!! For months now, I have been given the desire to simplify and to use what I have on hand at this time. And here is your post encouraging this also.
Praise the Lord God for His healing and wisdom in the struggles your health. I have a hip that desperately needs healing and a hip replacement is risky. Please pray for wisdom, guidance and healing - He knows the path!
I will be joining you on your journey this year as well in the Bible study you are offering.
It is so wonderful to have you back ! Dear Dear Sister in Christ, you have been missed. Hugs and love to you and yours,
Blessings
Roxanne
Have prayed for you, Roxanne. {{{hugs}}} x
DeleteLooking forward to this! I don't actually have any unfinished projects but I do have project ideas so will be making a list and gathering supplies! Glad to hear you are doing much better! The Lord is indeed good!
ReplyDeleteThank you for including us. I like the idea of “12”. It is very hopeful in getting accomplished. My favorite part of your post is the Abigail study though. Oh thank you so much for a deeper dive into her character and heart.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jenny for re-inforcing what I've been doing for the last 2 years: using that which I already have (I've purchased very little, only items to finish the project that I did not have).
ReplyDeleteBut the idea of donating items is going to help me too.
I plan to read your Abagail posts too.
Isn't it lovely to know others are on a similar path? Bless you!
DeleteThis is a wonderful idea for 2026 dear Jennifer. Firstly I am so pleased you found the reason for all the pain in your arm/wrist - it can often be medication related as I have found this to be the case at times. You will be so relieved to have an answer finally.
ReplyDeleteI worked my way through a lot of my kitsets last year after I could no longer get the lid shut on the container they were in. I still have a couple so I would very much like to join in to accomplish this & I also have some half started projects. Yes its about finding the JOY in these along the way. So lovely to have you back in blogland my dear friend (sorry to repeat this all the time 😉 but it warms my heart). xx
YOU are such a joy, Julie!! xx
DeleteI will be joining you on the 12 projects, I have been feeling the need to just complete things and not start anything new. It will focus my mind more, rather than looking at everything as a whole. So looking forward to the Abigail study.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you found out what was causing the pain, praise God. Sue
"rather than looking at everything as a whole" - Sue, that's very true! There's a time to stand back and see the big picture, but there's also a time to look at things individually and move along one thing at a time.
DeleteI'm so happy that you were able to solve the pain issue with your arm and hand, thanks be to the Great Healer! It will be a joy to join the Abigail study group as well as working on my quilts in progress to hopefully make meaningful progress or finish all of them during the year. I don't call a quilt in progress a UFO unless it's been stagnant for several years. All but two of my quilts in progress will be donated since we have an abundance in residence. Blessings to you as you embark on your ambitious plan for the new year.
ReplyDeleteI love that! "a quilt in progress" if you're slowly working on it, and a UFO when it's been forever...I have both in my sewing room. ;-)
DeleteDear Jenny, this is beautiful. Thank you for your inspiring post. I can’t wait to see your finished creations. I love the way you have put this, it is God’s will and His way. So I need to listen and pray. I’m glad you found the cause of your pain. I’m also so happy you are writing again. I will definitely follow the Bible study. Lots of love, Bridget
ReplyDeleteHello Jenny, so excited to join Abigail Bible study and the UFO project as well. I have so much to learn from both. So very happy to hear of your positive health update and SO HAPPY of your decision to return to your blog, etc. Have a Blessed week! Kathy from Alabama, USA
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the good ideas. May the bless you this year!
ReplyDeleteJennifer, I was so glad you realized the medication was the problem. Many times, the side effects are worse than our initial complaint!
ReplyDeleteI've been using what I have as well. My husband also uses scrap pieces for new projects & repairs.
I've always loved the Abigail story!
Thank you for the time & effort you put into writing this blog!
All God's blessings from Appalachia, USA
That's so enocuraging to hear your husband uses his scrap pieces for projects too!
DeleteAaah, the medication - I am very sensitive to medications which is why I usually avoid them, but thankfully the Lord led me to the problem and I could heal swiftly once going off those pills. :-)
So happy you are blogging again. You are such an inspiration to me. Thank you for all you do! Glad to hear your arm and hand are back to normal. I will be joining in the UFO adventure as well as the Abigail Bible study. Looking forward to both. I have several embroidery projects and two knitting projects. It would be lovely to get these done.
ReplyDeleteCathi from Indiana, USA
Jenny, although I understand why you had to take a break from blogging, you were greatly missed. It is nice to have you back again! As a Christian woman myself, I love Bible studies that focus on the women of the Bible. And to do it with other women of faith is a double blessing. I will be joining with you in this study.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jennifer, delighted re your arm .Praise God.I hope to be writing and some patchwork and more practice with Pianoand yes I will join when I can, currently doing Romans with Mark.Lovely too have you backXX
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely to hear from you and get an update, Mary-Lou! x
DeleteThere’s something so satisfying about finishing a project and bonus having everything on hand. It gets the creative juices going in a different direction. I’ve just moved all my craft and fabric into a converted stable and decided it’s my year for finishing something before I start something else, also no more additional interests, stick to what I already have and don’t be acquisitive for no apparent reason. I’ll be joining you, Syndy
ReplyDeleteYour converted stable sounds amazing, Syndy!!
DeleteJenny, your 2026 project may be just what need. I unexpectedly lost my husband January 4th and have felt so overwhelmed. I believe your project will help me calm my apprehensions and give me somewhat of a direction.
ReplyDeleteI always look forward to receiving your little updates and they make me smile. So happy that you found what was causing the problem with your hand and arm. That drug can cause more problems than it helps.
God bless you my dear friend and May 2026 be a great year for you and your beloved family.
