Hello again, and welcome back...
Yes, it has surely been awhile since my last blog post. I had written back in May of taking a break for 4-6 weeks to focus on some health self-care, but more than 9 weeks have passed, and though I appreciated all the caring emails and Etsy messages asking how I was, I must apologise for not responding.
I do not want this blog post to just focus on the continuing pain and treatment challenges of the past year since the accident with my knee, as it can be quite wearying being regularly asked "are you any better?", "how is your leg now?", or "what treatment are you having?" and not having the mental capacity to explain something that is ongoing and still being treated with various avenues - so I simply opted out of correspondance and blogging. Please forgive me if you are one of those precious women who reached out, and received no reply. ((hugs)) I even avoided discussing things with my daughters, and rather turned the conversation to their own lives and families, because to me they mattered far more.
So let me offer a one-off reply today and then we'll move on to more enjoyable things.
The past three months have been the worst with regards to pain and recovery. It turns out that I was given the wrong treatment by a number of different physiotherapists and more damage was done to my knee and surrounding ligaments over the course of these past twelve months. But they were simply following the guidelines for various 'singular' aspects of my injury and not the combined aspects, believing they were helping, so I hold nothing against them.
Last week I began with a new physiotherapist, a woman with much experience, a woman who didn't just listen to me (such a blessing) but who connected the dots with all the areas of my knee which were injured in the accident, rather than honing in on just one. She's a gift from God to be sure. I am unable to sit in a car (as a driver or a passenger) and cannot travel even short distances anymore, so we are doing video appointments instead of 'in person' ones. Even in the past week of following her advice, I have some improvement, and though the road ahead is long, I have hope of finally recovering and getting back to my normal everyday life. The extensive nerve pain side of things is extremely difficult, and the treatment for that has thus failed, but I have faith this too will be resolved in time.
I have read your comments and emails, and prayed for those of you who shared stories of your own mobility, joint and pain challenges, and the treatments which helped you. What surprised me was how different they all were, and how different my situation was to all of them as well. How very unique our bodies are, and that helped me realise that its okay to get second (and third and fourth) opinions if a treatment is not helping or is making the problem worse. Thank you for praying for me, and please be assured that I was praying for you too. What a gift it is to pray for others and know that we do not need to have all the facts about someone's situation for God knows it all. We just need to lift them before His throne and leave it all in His care. Blessed are we.
As I have been unable to stand for long, it was important to find a project that would take time and not need for me to be up and down in the sewing room (I do miss that though), so the best option was to begin a cross-stitch pattern. You know, it took me a month to choose one. ;-) I had decided a lovely strawberry themed pattern would be lovely hung near the kitchen and so I began looking online at paper patterns and PDF downloads.
There were some lovely small ones, but my preference was a larger design that would take time, and that search took quite a while. Eventually I chose this one, and am loving it. This was my first time printing a large PDF cross-stitch pattern, and the 8 pages of the strawberry graph needed to be cut and aligned to give one very large sheet to work from. Initially my thought was to not buy another large pattern such as this again, but over the past six weeks in which I have been working on this, it has not been a problem at all. In fact I have purchased another cross-stitch pattern from the same designer to work on when I finish the strawberry one (though the next one is smaller and only 6 pages of graph). I may tea dye the strawberry cross-stitch when its finished, as I think it will suit a more 'aged' display when framed.
Our garden is somewhat changed this winter. If you're new here, we live in the tropics where summer vegetables are grown in winter. I do a little in the garden each day, thankful that everything was planted months ago before my injury worsened, so it only needs watering and fortnightly fertilising, along with the joy of harvesting fresh tomatoes, herbs, spring onions, leeks, beans, cucumbers, snow peas, rocket, bok choy, lettuce, herbs and other greens. Our pomegranate tree has five good fruits on it, and more forming, so it has finally established itself after four years of nothing but a single fruit two years ago.
My rock, other than Jesus, has been and always is, my precious husband. He works six days a week, and yet these past months has taken on some of my home duties in order to alleviate a bit of the regular homemaking work load that I love and miss. Small things, like doing the dishes after breakfast and making the bed before he leaves for work. Watering the vegetable gardens at dawn became his responsibility too, as well as picking up the groceries after I have ordered them online. Every extra thing he's done has been done with a heart full of love for me, and I have never felt so deeply treasured in all my life - which surprised me because his love has always been true and deep.
Despite everything, I choose to laugh a lot, and smiling is natural because God made me to be 'glass half full' girl. Knowing that life is a gift not be taken for granted, as are the family our Father gave me, JOY overflows in my life every day.
His Word is alive and as I read, He has given me more 'epiphanies' this year than ever before. I am always telling my husband, "Mark, listen to this..." and he also marvels at things hidden deep in Scripture than are too easily overlooked. Oh how exciting this is!
You know, this past year is not one I would have chosen had I known in advance the level of pain and immobility that would progress with the passing of each month - BUT - I have learned things which would not have been learned any other way (I think) and for all these life lessons, sharp character edges smoothed, JOY increased, love expanded, spiritual insights, and confidence in pursuing a healing path and not giving up even now, it has been worth it. More than I could have imagined.
No matter what God allows in life, do not let it rob you of growth, change, and hope. It's too easy to wallow when things are harder than you'd expect, to allow despair, complaining, impatience and other negative attitudes to infect your heart and mind...and by extension to spread into your relationships with loved ones, and even with God. It may be hard to be happy and hopeful if you're not naturally a positive person (my husband is like that) but God can do anything, so why not ask Him to change your perspective and to graciously highlight things in your life which bring to mind the JOY your heart needs. ((hugs))
I'm sure this post is long enough for today. Now that I have updated you, it's a relief to move on with blogging again and focusing more on the everyday life of homemaking, regardless of the life season you or I are in, and on living this life to its fullest with JOY and hope in the Lord.
God bless dear ones!! Let me know how YOU are okay?
I have a gift for you before I sign off...
I first released this pattern in 2012, and I still use the table runner today as it's one of my favourites though it is a little worn out. I have long wanted to remake it, so that might happen soon. I'll share pics here if it does. May you be blessed as you make it for your own home or as a gift...and remember, have faith, hold on to hope, love God with all your heart, and show His love to those around you...
Until next time,

So happy to see your blog post, they are written with such love and gratitude and I find so much joy in reading them. I am glad you are on the mend, injuries and illness can be such a trying time. Michelle
ReplyDeleteHello Jennifer, it is good to read your blog again, and to find such faith, hope and love within it, despite your pain. ( I too know all about troublesome knees!)
ReplyDeleteI think about you often as I have you to thank for setting me off on my UFO year. I am amazed how much I have achieved, after setting myself a monthly project as you suggested at the beginning of the year. Some projects have been hanging around for years and I am delighted to get them finished and in use ( and out of my sewing room!)
I hope that you have been able to get some of your UFOs dealt with too?
Your strawberry cross stitch project looks beautiful, and is a testament to your patience.
You are truly blessed in your beloved; and I am sure he is finding joy in being able to serve you in this difficult time. Isn’t it hard to allow our husbands to “take over” our work, and yet this is so important sometimes. Gill, in Norway
Jennifer, it’s good to hear from you again. I have thought of you often and kept you in my prayers. I pray that you would continue to heal and you would be able to resume the activities that you love.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Michelle
Sending love x
ReplyDeleteOh Jenny, what a joyful delight to have you corresponding again. Your gracious, gentle and loving voice has been sorely missed. Would you believe that my mother shared almost the same words about changing my attitude at work (long standing colleague is leaving and we are very sad about that)? The Lord speaks in so many ways :) So so happy to hear from you and the faithful care of the Lord you have known while away. #thankfulThursday
ReplyDeleteIt is so good to “hear” you again on your blog. Despite all you are enduring you have such a positive outlook on life. Your strawberry cross stitch is gorgeous and must have been a great distraction.
ReplyDeleteJenny it is good to 'see' you here and be encouraged by your sweet and gentle words, and love for our Awesome Lord God, that shows through everything you write.
ReplyDeleteI am having to learn to live with a degree of pain in my right hand and wrist - a combination of arthritis (getting old) and post operative nerve damage - so not impressed with either condition, but pain is a teacher we cannot ignore! Thank you for being such a gentle and gracious example for me
Blessings
Maxine
What a lovely welcome surprise in my "inbox". Wishing you & family all the very best. Praying for it too! Michelle
ReplyDeleteSuch a treat to have a note from you! And grateful f or the loving and giving hands, seen and unseen, caring for you! My favorite verse is “though He slay me, yet will I trust Him”. And, believe me, this year He’s shown me how much I can trust Him. Sending love and prayers! Matty
ReplyDeleteMatty, thank you for reminding me of this verse! Bless you! x
DeleteYou have often been in my thoughts and prayers Jennifer so it is lovely to find you back here again. I do hope that the new physio is able to continue helping you. Your strawberries are gorgeous and I like the tea dye idea - it will be interesting to see if you still consider it when you have finished. Looking forward to hearing more news from you in due course. xx
ReplyDeleteGood Morning! What a sweet surprise to see your post. I must admit when I open my computer and click on the blogs I follow, when yours comes up and there was nothing new, I prayed a little prayer for you, knowing you are in our Lord's hands. Thank you for the new pattern.
ReplyDeleteThis piece of scripture has given me a lot to think about during some trials - I pray it gives you hope and even joy.
2 Corinthians 12:9–10
9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong."
Blessings and love
I so understand what you are going through. I had a hip replacement last April and it turned into a nightmare spending 3 months in 4 different hospitals due to complications that had nothing to do with the hip. Now I am reliving it day by day. PLEASE DO NO APOLOGIZE for what you are going through. I learned more about faith through different people and strengthened my relationship with our Lord. I found myself encouraging more people how to pray. You know He doesn't give you anything you can't handle. I finally pretended I was in a hotel and gave up being frustrated. Now if the pain rises up I just tell people, no, I can't do something now but I will let you know when. You have given us so many gifts, our part is now giving you the gift of understanding and healing and praying for your recovery FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES. There is more than your knee you need to deal with. Trust me. And then you will be back and you have the right to just say today is a good day and leave it at that. This is your time to rest, be waited on and concentrate on YOU. Thank you for beautiful embroideries and now I will think of you with good thoughts with every stitch. You are in my prayers. You are loved!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry pain and immobility have been such problems for you lately. Thank you for your example of patience and waiting on the Lord. I wish I were better at automatically looking to see what God will teach me through hard times. It's thrilling to know that God is using this time to show you these new insights.
ReplyDeleteI will pray for healing and continued and increasing closeness with Him.
It was so nice to see you in my in box. I'm happy to hear that you have found someone that is finally helping you with your pain. You are an inspiration to me to always put my trust in God no matter what. I try to thank Him for everything. Good and bad because I'm always closer to Him in the bad times. I love your strawberries! Prayers for your continued healing.
ReplyDeleteBlessings to you and hubby. Take care of yourself.
ReplyDeleteI've recently have a disappointing blow of my prayers not producing what I hoped would be a step toward reconciliation with my adult daughter and have been again questioning if my prayers are worth the effort. So, I'm thankful for your words of continued faith and encouragement today. Keep letting God use your words for him.
ReplyDeleteHi Jenny the other day the Lord brought your name to my mind. So I said a prayer for you. I was happy to see your blog today. I will continue to keep you in my prayers stay strong and sending hugs. Thank you for the free pattern. 🙏❤️
ReplyDeleteJennifer, what a lovely surprise to see a newsletter and blog post from you this morning. I have followed you since Elephantz Home Issue 1 but never commented. Your post today touched my heart in such a way that I had to thank you. I am praying for you and your family. God bless. ❤️
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to see you pop up on my reading list dear Jennifer as I had been thinking of you a great deal lately & thinking that you'd said a 6 week break & it must be more than this & I must check in with you ... then here was your newsletter & your post.
ReplyDeleteI am pleased to read that after so very long, you seem to have found the right path regarding physiotherapy. I hope some improvements continue for you - constant pain & not being able to do normal things can be so wearying & debilitating.
Jennifer please remember to use colour catchers if you tea dye that beautiful strawberry cross stitch. I tea dyed one recently done in red cottage garden threads & the colours ran badly. You will probably remember to do this & I don't know why I forgot but I cant "un-do it" now. That cross stitch is so gorgeous - I have been enjoying a return to that craft this year too but my projects are only small.
Take care dearest friend. Sending love & prayers to you x0x
I hope the the physiotherapist helps you and body achieve wins every day and that your goal to return to your normal progresses in ways you can see and feel. You're right about every body being different and that the higher power, God, heals all. So good to read a post from you again. Your uplifting posts have been missed.
ReplyDeleteSo very Happy when your email showed up in my box. Glad that you are able to do your cross stitching. I tried that one time and evidently I am x challenged. I really enjoy reading about how your husband has been helping you a bit more. I know that he is a very busy man. Truly, a gift from God is a husband who truly loves his wife
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolute joy to get a letter in the mail from you! Glad that you finally found someone able to understand the whole picture around your injury and that healing is on the horizon. Did you have a bad fall with your knee? I've been struggling for two years also with knee injuries after falling few times with the knee taking the whole weight, but luckily not nearly as bad as yours and it healed on its own. May God bless you and your family as well as the healing process. Love.
