As a seasonal declutterer, I have learned over the years that some things which appear to have outlived their usefulness, may just be in need of a new purpose. Those things are stored away for a year or so, and if after that time I still find no use for them, they are donated.
But if I do find a useful way to repurpose the item, I get quite excited!
A few weeks back I did a re-ordering of my sewing space after selling almost half my fabric stash. As I rarely design anymore, just the odd one when I have inspiration, there was no need to keep fabrics which have lingered on my shelves for too many years. My style has changed the past few years and I'm still discovering exactly what I really like these days...probably a very eclectic mix of a few styles if the truth be told. Anyhow, as I went through all the fabrics, I also dug out a small plastic tub of old linens. These linens were clothes once upon a time - tops, skirts, even a few dresses. As the years passed and I wore them again and again the linen would wear away in certain places, but the rest of the fabric would still be lovely, albiet much softer than when it was first purchased (soft washed aged linen is beautiful)...
Instead of packing the linens away again, I kept them on my sewing room desk for the next few weeks as I knew that they would be perfect for a few simple projects I had in mind.
The first project was a new covering, with pocket, for one of my very old Bibles. It had a deteriorating cover, leaving spatterings of the green bonded leather over everything it touched - mostly my dresses as I sat it on my lap each morning.
I chose the remains of a red striped linen top, which had a lace trim around the bottom edge. That lovely washed-out lacy edging helped the pocket stand out...
...and held my pencils and pen, for I write notes all through my Bibles! One day I shall transfer the notes from all my Bibles into one single Bible because I have hundreds and hundreds of notes scattered everywhere.
The next thing I made was a cover for a Bible notebook, which also had it's cover falling apart (in fact the cover actually stuck to my desk and had to be eased off with a knife). As our climate is so very hot and humid, all bonded leather, or plastic leather-look covers, will eventally melt and break apart.
I chose a pink and grey stripe, which had also been the remains of a favourite top, and added an applique flower onto the front using a grey stripe linen (once a dress) and a couple of cotton fabrics from my remaining quilting stash.
In this notebook I write out passages of Scripture on one page, and a few explanations from the Hebrew or Greek on the opposite page. I'm currently going back through 1 and 2 Peter.
It has been lovely to use my refreshed Bible and notebook this month, with their pretty, and soft, linen coverings!
I thought today how apt that verse from Ecclesiastes was for repurposing good fabrics, and giving them a second lease on usefulness. There was a time when I would not consider cutting up clothing, but felt I should donate the entire item, but not today. When I have paid for an item, worn it, and genuinely loved the fabric, it still has a purpose I can lay hold to.
I thought about the Proverbs 31 woman, whom we studied all through last year (I am working on putting all the studies into a single file for you soon), and how she would have kept any clothing fabric that still had useful sections, and would have repurposed them as a way of saving finances, and providing for her household.
I have a number of ideas swirling around in my mind for more projects that can be sewn with the old linens I have saved, and will be sure to show you as I make them. But what about you? Do you have ideas for good fabrics which may not be perfect, but have lovely sections just waiting for a makeover? Please share them with me, and with the ladies reading here. :-)
Thank you for ALL the emails, and the comments left here after my post last week. Hubby and I think its a good idea to invest in a paid newsletter once again - God tapping on our hearts perhaps. Trusting in Him to provide as He always has.
I must say however, that for the first time, every comment was 'no reply blogger', even those whom have always had their email address available with their comment. So I apologise for not replying, as I had no way to do so, but EVERY comment overflowed with love and kindness which filled my heart and gave me extra renewed vigour for blogging in future.
I hope you've had a lovely week with laughter and joy, but if not, and things have been a challenge or you've faced a trial, I am praying that God provides avenues of help, hope and kindness to meet you right where you are.
He is gracious, loving, and generous to a fault, my dear...and He loves you. I would not be here today without His faithfulness to me in the darkest of valleys and His mighty hand to lift me back into the Light.

Two lovely makes Jennifer. Nice to hold I am sure and pretty to look at. Love the pocket for your pens on the front. xx
Such a lovely way to use what you have. I love your blog and I am so very glad that Gods laid it on your heart to continue it. I missed you! I would definitely subscribe to your newsletter if you decide to do it again. I still have old ones from years ago! I am always encouraged by your words and your faith in Jesus. Good bless you dear Jennifer x
What happy news to read that you will be returning to the newsletters! I, too, have saved many ideas and newsletters from your blog. I'll be using up some of the stash to make up simple tote bags with pockets inside and out. I'll be making 3 bags soon to put the 3 quilts I am currently making for others. It makes a nice two-part gift that way, and I don't waste paper. As I sit here reading your blog & enjoying my first cup of tea of the day I'm so happy that we'll be hearing from you again. I don't buy very much fabric anymore, except for the occasional small purchase at a thrift store, a bag of scraps purchased at the quilt shows (freshens up the scraps), or the free table at the quilt meetings I attend monthly. Can't quite bring myself to part with stash but as I get a bit older that may change. I still spend at least 20-25 hours per week in the quilt room sewing - and am thankful for every minute. Many projects also make it into my lap in the evenings when we are watching programs - so I can sew bindings on quilts, do hexie work, etc. I've been saving up some embroidery ideas to do on simple neutral blocks, to put into the quilts I so love to work on. It's worth it to see the happiness when I present a quilt to someone. Even when I don't have anyone in mind the Lord always either puts a little nudge into my heart or puts that person in front of me as soon as the quilt is finished. I don't seem to ever be able to just sew up a stash of quilts ahead of time. Thank you again for the happy news - I'll have a smile on my face (and happiness in my heart) for the whole day! Deb
I love your Bible and notebook covers. I often rescue clothes from the wastebasket my husband decides are not good enough to donate. I remove and save the buttons and cut off the material that is worn and save the rest. It has come in handy many times.
I haven't had much time to sew or do anything crafty since last October. My sister-in-law died suddenly and unexpectedly. I have been helping my brother deal with everything and also helping my sister who has been dealing with stage 4 cancer.
I want to say again how thankful I am that God nudged you to continue with the blog. It is the highlight of my day when a post comes in from you. God bless you and your husband.
A few years ago I cut up many old t-shirts into 2" strips turning them into t-shirt yarn. Since then I have been working on a braided rug. My first attempt did not work, but the second one is now getting to a good size. I have been hand sewing the braid together as I go around the rug, so it takes a lot of time. But I also haven't been working on it as much over the last year, so the project has currently stalled. I also now have much more t-shirt yarn than I think I will ever use!
One thing I like to do with fabric is tear (or cut) into strips and make crochet baskets. Erin at Repeat Crafter Me has several free patterns on her site.
My heart lept with joy when I read you were continuing your ministry to people all over the world -even in the very rural area of southern Illinois, U.S.
I also have well loved and worn items which I am going to follow your example and repurpose.
I truly enjoy all your ideas for creating from the old and creating new. And, isn't that exactly what God does.
So good to hear from you again! Love your ideas for reusing clothes. When both of my parents passed away, I used their clothes to make quilts, table runners, and a small wall hanging (from my dad's ties) for my siblings and nieces. Might be a good idea for something to give your grandchildren. I hope Blossom and her little family are doing well and that you and hubby are also. Things here in the U.S. are not so great since our national election but I'm trying not to dwell on it. Sending hugs and a sloppy kiss from Bailey!
Thanks for this tip Petunia, will check her out.🙋🏼♀️
As we all have said Jennifer, it’s so lovely to see your post pop up. I too use up and repurpose what I can. I’m a wee bit older than you so it’s time to let go of things that I will not need now, however I still enjoy creating have little projects in mind for gifts. Thank you also for the Christian theme to your writings. Iron sharpens iron and that’s a blessing for all who visit here.
Blessings Gail.💕
Thank you. I only found you a few months before you decided to call it quits

I am so glad you are back! I only found you on your last blog ...somehow on a google search for something... and was sad I had come in on the tail end of something beautiful and inspiring...
This last blog has come at the end of a challenging week, and has warmed my heart because of your love for the Word of God. Thank you for sharing
I really enjoyed this article. I used to always feel I had to donate clothing too, and now I'm going to repurpose anything made from natural cloth.
May I ask what version of the bible that is? I love the layout and the space for notes. Mine's getting a bit hard on my eyesight as everything is cramned in double columns making it difficult since my eyesight deteriorated.
I woukd love a newsletter about your thoughts on your bible readings. I'd subscribe to that. Hope you have a lovely week and I look forward to seeing your other repurposing ideas. Xx
Back when my daughters were little I repurposed my husband's flannel shirts into a cute patchwork toddler's dress, with one sleeve coming from one shirt, one from another, the bodice from another, etc. It was fun and unique.
Wow wow - those are lovely!!! My bible is doing the same thing, the cover is leaving bits of DNA all over the place. Looks like a crime scene when I read it in bed. But I cheated and bought a new cover, lol. Yours are much nicer! I have some old vintage aprons that are falling apart and can't be worn, but the fabrics are so lovely I should figure something out to use them for. But since I no longer sew......maybe I could frame a collage of them or something, because they really bring me joy to look at them.
I repurpose clothing as well and make many things from the fabric. I can't tell you how pleased I am and how blessed I feel whenever I find one of your posts in my email! Thank you for shining your light into my life again.
I love your made over Bible and note book Jennifer! Well, fabric is now a very expensive commodity. Because of buying mainly inn thrift stores I get a shock to see the price of cottons, velvets and also knitted fabrics. My favourite is Liberty print. That is an arm and a leg! So I now watch every thrift store for these things and sometimes it is in linens but sometimes in a shirt or dress, silk I have found in scarves and dressing owns. I mainly do my best to get my project out of it or fat quarters. Mainly because I can press and neatly fold and stack them. THEN on Etsy I found girls selling pieces of knits ie mohair, cashmere, suede and leather... which had obviously been cut from jumpers, coats, jackets... some beaded laces and all sorts. But clearly all recycled. People have made whole stores based on these. In colder climates wool from clothing can be made into patchwork blankets. I just love this! xxx
Dear Jennifer~ It made my day reading you are led to start blogging again! You are such a blessing to me and your words of wisdom and honestly about life’s ups and down touch my heart and lift me up.
