Lemon tree quite delicious...

I've had a few run ins with infection and migraine the past week so I've kept my distance from the computer as much as is possible, though we've still needed to go out house-hunting.

On Monday we submitted an application for one rental home near the beach which as Mr E says, "ticks all the boxes", and are currently awaiting a response. If that fails we have another home (on the beach) to inspect on Thursday.

During our travels far and wide to look at prospective homes I noticed many lemon, lime and orange trees full of fruit and as is always the case when I see luscious round balls of citrus and smell their fragrance on the breeze, my thoughts turn to the kitchen and what I can make or bake with one or all citrus fruits.

My head was feeling much improved Tuesday morning so after brewing a large pot of tea I browsed through a few older style cookbooks and found a "just right" new-to-me recipe.

Usually I tweak a few ingredients and steps in recipes and this one was no different, but not because I was being extra creative. In fact, my kitchen now works on the 3 - 1 principle.

For three weeks I will do one normal grocery shop every Wednesday, but in the fourth week I 'shop from the pantry' using up what we have already in the fridge, freezer and pantry supplies. I still need to top up with extra fresh fruit and veg, but everything else I can make or use what's on hand.
Things like bread and almond milk are easy to make and as long as I have the basic ingredients always in stock we never run out.

When tweaking this new recipe I replaced tinned passionfruit with the fresh ones I had leftover from last week, and used more lemon because I had plenty on hand and love to add extra tartness where I can.

I don't think I shared a "Living the Gentle Domestic Life" recipe during August but as it was a month of intentional slowing and planning for the future everything non-essential was laid aside, but when Mr E and I tasted this Passionfruit and Lemon Slice it immediately became a priority to share with you!

We taste tested by cutting one piece into tiny squares and there was much "mmmmmm..." and "yummmm" heard around the kitchen as each little bit was savoured.

I've even drawn up a little lemon tree for you to trace and stitch while you bake your own Passionfruit & Lemon Slice. It's on the last page of the recipe sheets (both versions, full page and half page)...

...which you can download for free HERE in my shop.

Over the next few days I'll add all the previous "Living the Gentle Domestic Life" recipes/stitcheries into my shop as well.

Besides house-hunting and baking I've also been working on a new mini-quilt design using the next Tilda range of fabrics, Cottage, which will be in stores October 1st.

I began by piecing some tiny cotton spool blocks for top and bottom borders and then started on the sewing machine which will be the centre section of this mini quilt...

After the applique and embroidery was complete my mind wandered to hexies...

...which will create a side border for the machine block (I think).

I will have a play with that idea later today after Blossom and Cully May have come to visit for afternoon tea. Bloss is eager to try the Passionfruit and Lemon Slice, but she's also excited to open a parcel of pretty fabrics and lace sent to her by my dear friend Susan in the US.

I'll leave you today with this inspiring story which lifted my heart when Blossom shared it with me.
It also caused a few tears to fall and made me realise a few home truths. It only runs for 5 minutes so I do hope you'll watch...

Never doubt your ability to bring joy to others.
God can always use a willing pair of hands, a heart that cares, and gifts you may not realise you have.

"Heartstrings" - a Tilda Club design...

In Australia most quilt shops stock a new Tilda Club pattern & kit set every second month, and each one is designed by a fellow Aussie designer. These kits are very popular and many quilt shops even post overseas for our offshore sewing lovers!

This time the newest Tilda Club pattern & kit release is one of my own designs! I've been keeping this a secret for a few months, but today you finally get to see "Heartstrings - a Sewing Room Mini Quilt"...

My mini-quilt features a sweet embroidered pocket at the top for storing embroidery hoops...

...a scissor keep and needle-book, plus 3 more pockets along the bottom for holding a rotary cutter, tape measure, seam ripper and other odds and bobs!

For those who would like to see my original project it will be displayed around Australia in the "Tilda Trunk Show" at the quilt shops listed below.

You'll also see a second of my projects on display at the Trunk Show, something I'll show here on the blog next month ( and that one will have a pattern you can purchase from me no matter where you live in the world!).
Aaaah, the secrecy!

Each of these stores also stock the kits for my Mini-Quilt, but if you're not in their area simply Google the name of the shop and give them a call to purchase one!

"Homemade Stitched With Heartstrings" is something I live. After all, there's nothing quite like homemade is there?

Days of the week...

Stitching this past week has been rather sweet.
I've designed a set of seven embroideries for May's issue of The Stitchery Club and the blending of thread on linen with the inspiration of a few Tilda fabrics from my stash brought the first three designs to life...

These are the Tilda prints I've put aside for this project, though I may not use the deep pink spot as I rather like the softness of just pastels...

When the seven blocks have been stitched they will become a set of hanging pockets, a pattern which will be included in the May issue.

I imagine you already know what I'll be stitching this weekend?!

Information about joining the Club is here.

What's captured your attention with needle and thread this week?

Something pretty...

Most of what I make requires pen and paper and lots of note taking because I will need to write a pattern afterwards, so it's incredibly relaxing when I can just make something 'off the top of my head' with no need for shared instructions.

The freedom to play-as-I-sew usually happens when my 'to-do' list is up to date and I'm in need of some creative down time and that's what happened last weekend when I took up Fee's challenge to members of her Facebook "Tilda Lovers Club" to create anything we like from our personal stashes of pretty Tilda fabric.

I gathered all my small Tilda scraps leftover from other projects and made little 4-patch squares and borders to randomly piece a pillow front which I then backed with some cotton quilt wadding, also leftover from past projects.

Before I began the free-hand quilting with Perle #12 thread I added four paper pieced hexies and the prettiest pink vintage button centres...

After the hand quilting was done I sewed the backing to my pillow, stuffed it, and ladder stitched the opening closed.
The final step was making two long narrow ties which I then wrapped around the pillow and tied in bows...

It reminded me of a large pincushion hay-bale style!

It always surprises me what can be made from the contents of a scrap box!
Are you inspired to find a use for some of your own scraps?

I might make another scrappy project this weekend...no idea what it will be, but that's part of the fun.

Preparing something for you...

Do you have some fabrics leftover from an old (or new) jelly roll?
Maybe you have a basket of 2 1/2" wide prints?
As I have a few in my scrap bin, and assumed you might too, I thought it might be fun for us all to make a pretty project from them.

After the housework and baking were out of the way this morning I decided to get lost in my sewing room and play with these Tilda bits and pieces...

...which are beginning to look rather good together.

Tutorial later in the week.
Any ideas what we'll be making?

"Be still my beating heart!"
(that was a hint, okay?)

Have a brilliant week,
hugs

Gift number 4 and my UFO finish this week...

Hmmm...should I show you the gift first, or my finished UFO????
Ha ha! I'm sure you want the present, so here is my fourth Christmas gift to you this week...

The Shabby Roses Christmas Tree was the third design I had published in an Australian craft magazine, not long after I began my designing journey. It was 2009 and I was just starting to create lots of lovely 'shabby roses' stitcheries...

The fabrics I used were Lila Tueller's "Woodland Bloom" which are still one of my all time favourites.
I even covered the buttons with it...

I made two versions of this design, the other was in green and rusty orange...

The border was slightly different, I stitched the year across the top and omitted the presents from the base of the tree...

I wonder how you will stitch the Shabby Roses Christmas Tree?

You can download this free gift pattern HERE from my shop until December 10th.

Now on to my UFO Finish this week!

Back in 2011, my sweet friend Synnoeve from Norway sent me a beautiful Tilda pattern to stitch.
I used the Tilda threads she had gifted me for the embroidery, but then I put the completed design away because I wasn't sure how I wanted to display it.

The other day I was sorting through some old Tilda fabric and this beautiful Christmas print reminded me of the Tilda stitchery!

It was perfect to border the pretty angel...

What do you think?

She will finally be a part of Christmas this year.
I might even keep her watching over us all year through.
