As I write this blog post August is just hours away, and so we edge closer to the end of another season. Each year I long for August to move slowly so that I can enjoy every moment of winter's farewell, and especially this year as the season has been a tad cooler than usual in our tropical corner of the country, and with it I felt my body able to rest more, giving in to the weariness accumulated over the previous long, hot seasons. It's been lovely to snuggle my feet into socks and slippers when I rise and move around the kitchen preparing our breakfast whilst still dark outside, a thick cardigan warming me as I work. Oh yes, I truly love this time of year.
Being the end of a season, with spring only a month away, my mind gears up to re-organise spaces in the home, and this past week it was time for a jolly good scrub and scuttle of my sewing room. Measuring 100 sq feet (or 3 metres x 3 metres) I have a lot of things to squeeze into a small space that doubles as sewing room and Elefantz office. There's nowhere for my computer so that is out in the living room.
The "before" photos are below. Many cups of tea and a lot bit of chocolate sustained me as I worked here for three days...
I began on Saturday morning, pulling almost everything out of it's place in order to decide what to keep and what to let go of. It was also an opportunity to gather the many stitcheries from my original designs over the past 10-12 years and sort through them - some to use in projects, some to re-photograph for patterns, and others to sell in my Etsy shop later this year. The huge job of sorting/organising 'stuff' came to a conclusion mid-Monday morning, and then it was time to sort through all my paperwork and business stuff. Everything was completed by Monday evening, at which time I sat down and made plans for selling, donating, using and creating storage.
I'll show you the "after" photos in another post sometime in August.
Tuesday morning I gathered the pile of UFO's which had been put aside as I cleaned out the room, and made decisions on what order they'd be completed in coming months. The large quilt projects are now also in order so that I can focus on one at a time and hopefully (slowly) complete them over the next couple of years for the grandchildren or daughters. I also spent a couple of hours re-photographing some of my older designs, the ones I really love, to pop in MY SHOP soon.
But back to the newest pattern in this year's free block of the month, Joy in the Ordinary
It's was quickly sketched and stitched last Friday, but it was only yesterday that I realised how well the little embroidery hoop and needle marries with my new theme for August! With a pile of small UFOs (small in comparison to a quilt) carefully sorted on my cutting table at the moment, it really will be a month to "Finish what you started"...
IMPORTANT NEWS...
I'm going to share another blog post tomorrow or Friday, with a very special 'extra' free pattern for you, as an encouragement to begin working on your own UFOs, so be sure to drop by or go HERE and subscribe to get my blog posts via email.
Please note, this is NOT the same as the newsletter I send out a couple of times a month - that will be ending August 30th, as my newsletter provider is closing and the cost for me to move to another newsletter provider will triple what I pay now.
Missed the previous seven blocks? They are HERE
Use the link below to download the new pattern
I will leave any other news for the next post, which will be before week's end. I have finally gotten myself organised to blog regularly, and as the focus in August will be finishing what we started, there'll be a lot of different things to share - and not just sewing. Golly, I am so excited to be able to regularly blog throughout the next month and hopefully on through the rest of the year. God has put many things on my heart and you'll hear about those along the way too.
So, my dear friends, I shall sign off to day with a prayer and a blessing over you all...may the Lord who is so gracious, provide for you in the way you most need through August, and gently nudge you if you're stuck, redirect you if you're going the wrong way, and speak words of life and encouragement if you are wandering in the valley.
Okay my lovelies, go gather those UFOs and let's begin a month of finishing some of them. Let me know in the comments what you are planning, what UFOs you've completed, and any other news about your life right now.
God bless and sending you the biggest hug,
Don't miss out on any Elefantz news or free patterns.

Hi Jennifer, Thank you for this post, I enjoy them all. I’m glad August will be ‘finish what you start’, I have a few unfinished projects. I think having them hanging around you keeps you stuck, procrastinating and just messing about. Good wishes to all, Barb Mc
Lots of UFO's here Jennifer but a lot of them are also WIP's as I do like to swap projects for variety. Lovely new design Jennifer, thank you. Looking forward to seeing your re vamped sewing space. xx
Hi Jennifer,
Winter sounds so cozy the way you describe it :)
Thanks for sharing all these before photos :)
July just flew by !
See you on the blog next month :)
hugs, take care,
Joanne
Hi Jennifer,
I also have quite a few UFO's, both large quilts and small wall hangings and stitcheries.
My thought earlier this week was also to start off with the smaller items and hopefully gather momentum to tackle some of the larger projects.
Look forward to seeing your tidied sewing room.
Take care,
Sue
Oh cooler weather sounds wonderful as we hit over 100 this week in Oklahoma. I have some embroidery BOM’s to get finished this month. With all the rain we had in June my garden got planted late but is starting to show signs of growth. My peach tree has had over a thousand peaches this year. I have put up bags and bags of frozen and 10 pints of preserves. I hate to see them go bad but what will I do with so many. My neighbors have their own. I am thankful to have so many to share with family. I hope you have a blessed August as we all journey to get things done.
Jennifer, you are always an inspiration and breath of fresh air. Thank you for all you do!
I definitely have a few wips. I have a little notebook and every January on left hand side of the page I write a list of my wips in three categories; cross stitching, embroidery, and quilting/sewing. I give them a tick when they are completed. On the right hand side I write a list of everything completed in each category. Most things are started and finished in the same year so only ever go on the right hand side. It’s interesting to note which wips have been on the wip side for over a year, or even longer.
Thank you for the encouragement. I have several UFOs that are nearly complete. I needed this encouragement to finish and possible donate some.
The Lord bless you and Keep you.
Barbara
Over a year ago I committed to one needle project at a time. Even though it took over a year to complete a quilt, I didn't start any other sewing. After completion I put everything away with notes on potential project with remaining fabrics.
Then I started on reducing the ufo pile. Slowly and with a plan, I have completed 2 more quilts. I have a new calm attitude about sewing as I complete the unfinished. Yes, there will always be somethings unfinished such as prayers. I can create a calm environment to live in.
Thank you for reminding us to live slowly.
Spring
Dear Jenny
Thank you for the beautiful words of encouragement and sound wisdom. I am trying to begin a new project only after finishing a UFO. It's slow going but it's pleasing to actually have more things DONE. I am getting more confident in my abilities for which I am grateful to our Lord. It is an honour to share His wonderfully creative heart with others
Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for the encouraging post. I love reading your posts and miss them when you don’t blog for a while. I too have plenty of unfinished projects and will start with you to get them done. Three quilts and several articles of clothing are first up on the list. I’m so enjoying the joy in the ordinary block of the month as I try to simplify my life. I’m 71 retired and have a husband who wants to travel to make up for all the years we couldn’t. I’m trying to stay home more and just enjoy life here at home. LOL When we were younger it was the other way around, I wanted to go and he wanted to stay. That being said in order to be able to travel more, I’m simplifying more at home so I don’t feel overwhelmed by homekeeping when we are here including a lot of cleaning out of extraneous stuff. I was glad to see your sewing room in kinda the shape mine is in right now. Enjoy the slow life and blessings to you always.
Hi Jennifer, in the midst of a blistering summer here in Northern hemisphere, at least it's blistering to me. I'm anxious for autumn and winter. Thank you for Ordinary Joy. My sister and I have been stitching together and enjoying every moment. Such a blessed time together.
I love this new free stitch you've shared with us. An embroidery hoop, it's wonderful. I've been doing mostly cross stitch recently, but I hope to do some embroidery soon too. Smaller stitches like this should go pretty quick. I love your theme for August. Thank you for all the encouragement you give us all.
Hello dear Jennifer ... thank you for the pattern for Joy in the Ordinary. I have yet to begin stitching them but have downloaded them faithfully .. just adore them. I shall pull out some small UFO"s for August & am so grateful for the encouragement that you give to us ALL out here in blogland.
Funnily enough I am going to measure my sewing room today as I've always thought yours & mine were about the same size. I always love seeing pics of yours as it is so light & fresh looking, & inviting.
Enjoy August my dear friend - I shall remind myself of this as I often struggle with August, it can be dark & gloomy here & a tad depressing & I am trying to appreciate each month & season on its own merits. 💗 x0x
Dearest Jennifer,
lovely to get your blog post today. Love the new block 8. It is just beautiful. I shall miss your newsletters. But I totally understand. I have been busy harvesting herbs and drying them to put away for winters use. I am doing ok. Same old same old. I did make 4 tea towels for a bridal shower today for my daughter. She picked out some pretty green linen fabric with a white stripe running through it. I also had to hem 2 pairs of work pants for her today also. I have figs in the garden this year.. They are absolutely delicious. Prayers going up for Mr. E and
Thanks Jennifer, I am still clearing out!!, nice to know across the world we are all doing the same!! In different ways! Love Mary-Lou X
Jennifer I too have lots of PHD's (Projects half done), but I am focusing on getting my cards made ahead of time for the next month or so, so I am not sending cards just before, or on folk's birthdays - especially those that need to go across the ditch to Aus :)
I am hoping to get some small cross stitches finished that got stalled, not long before everything got packed up for some three years. They have only been able to surface this year..
Blessings
Maxine
