A home; a sanctuary...

There's a big difference between dusty and dirty.

I used to think I had to scrub every inch of my home before I could invite anyone over because I had this perception that a "bit of dust = dirty house".
Wrong.

Not sure where that idea came from but it stuck with me for a lot of decades. Maybe from Nana? Apart from regular daily chores she used to polish the taps and the kitchen sink every day. Her tiny little one-bedroom flat shone - nah, it actually sparkled. She was a clean freak. But you know, those three rooms and outdoor bath were all she had and she wanted them to be neat as a pin.
Nana's semi-detached single floor flat was her mansion and by golly she looked after it.
She didn't have much to her name, so she lovingly cared for the things in her home - just like she cared for me when as a 3yo I became her responsibility.

Due to limited space almost everything Nana owned had a purpose, except for a beautiful china cabinet she'd inherited from her mother. Inside the curved glass of the polished oak doors were tiny gold-etched glasses, dainty porcelain figurines, and green glass bowls of all shapes and sizes. The locked china cabinet was polished each day, but the contents would only be taken out for dusting on rare occasions when I was not around. Wise woman.

I think most of us have too much stuff these days. And when we have too much stuff we just can't look after it like Nana cared for her treasures, can we? Food for thought. I'll ponder that later over a pot of tea.
But back to the 'dusty is not dirty' thing...

The Trade Winds blow through the tropics every October/November and that cool air is so refreshing that we open all the windows and doors and let the breeze rush through the house 24 hours a day.
As wonderful as this is and as deeply as I miss those winds when they're gone, I don't enjoy the dust 'clean-up' in December - mostly because mixed in with the dust is cat hair, lots and lots and lots of fine cat hair thanks to Princess Sophie.

But here I was at the end of December and my annual 'post-Trade Winds' deep clean was yet to begin so yesterday, in order to get a start before 2016 announced it's arrival, I decided to tackle the bedroom.

The dust bunnies were everywhere.

Dust gets trapped in the most obscure places. Between the lace of the lamp shade, inside my basket of wool and between every piece of cane, all over the quilts, along the door ridges, in the window screens and along the sill, among all the teeny tiny pieces of silver jewellery and inside the curves of each and every ornament. - I could go on (and on)...

Dust was behind, and under, and in, everything.
All I could do was pull the room apart piece by piece to dust, vacuum and polish.

Along the way I ended up culling a big bag of 'stuff' and though that was not in my original plan, it felt quite liberating.
The room is lovely again; calm, clean and welcoming.

And there's even a scent of lavender in the air.

But it's not perfect.
And that's fine with me.

I still have plastic tubs of fabric, wadding and notions in the corner, Mr E's television and Playstation under the window, a walk in wardrobe that doubles as storage for luggage, gifts, finished projects, bath towels and files, and a green armchair the cat sleeps on...

This room is part of our home.
A home that is a dwelling place, a workplace, and a sanctuary from the outside world.
It's clean, often messy, more often dusty, and displays visible evidence that we 'live' here.

What more could we ask for?

I think I'll tackle the office and sewing room next.
May need chocolate first...it's exhausting work, you know.
But very, very satisfying.

Cleaning the fridge...

Oh yes, that's a mighty attention grabbing title to a blog post don't you agree?! Ha ha!!
Thing is, it's actually the truth.
My morning after the ordinary chores and attending to the business stuff was spent pulling everything off, and out of, my 11 year old refrigerator.
It's a task I never enjoy until it's over - because when it's all shiny and gleaming back at me after a thorough scrubbing out, that wonderfully warm and fuzzy love for housework fills my heart and overflows into at least 48 hours of smiles.
I'm going to be rather brutal with personal honesty and show you the before photos, OK? If you're squeamish, look away and scroll down...

Do you suffer from magnet and note clutter too?

Gritty leftovers from veggies in the shelving and under the egg trays?

Juice splashes in the door?
(can you tell we make a lot of beetroot juice?)...

One hour later it was a whole different story....

Clutter removed from the front, doors polished, and only what I need (or love) is there...

Freezer cleaned and organised...

Shelving sparkling, fruit and veg supplies restocked...

Love the afterglow of domestic satisfaction.

Whilst still surveying the fruit of my labour (yes, you can laugh!) I decided to cook chutney and do some baking for Mr E....

...before brewing a fresh coffee and gathering my stitching so I could settle on the couch for an hour to watch another episode of -

I am seriously hooked on this show!
What about you?
One of my goals for A Year of Gentle Domesticity is to begin designing and making my own clothes, so this show has become invaluable for learning the skills I'll need.
Thankfully the episodes are on YouTube and I can watch that through our telly (no squinting at my ipad! yay!).

Do you reward yourself with something fun after you've completed an un-loveable chore?

I may have to hunt down a gold star...Mr E can pin it on me when he gets home from work.
Yes, keep laughing...

Housekeeping...

We got home from our over-nighter in Cairns yesterday afternoon. We took the motorbike this time instead of the car, and it was glorious!
Four hour trip up on Thursday, followed by a swim in the motel pool, then a sleep!
We took a long stroll around town after our nap, and enjoyed the yummiest Vietnamese/Thai food at a sidewalk cafe...

After dinner we went for another long walk, then got some cool drinks and nibblies to take back to the motel where we spent the rest of the evening reading, stitching, and just chillin' out!
Next morning we walked back down the Marina and bought coffees, and spent more time relaxing by the pool at the motel before the ride back to Townsville...

Our only stop during the 4 hour ride home was at Tully for a cool drink.
Our Honda ST 1300 bike is so comfortable to ride, and it was great to get one last long ride in before the summer up here takes our breath away.
Tully is another sugar cane town, and just behind the cafe where we got our drinks is the sugar refinery with smoking stacks...

Not much got done last night - we were pretty tired as the ride home was very windy, and that can weary the body. Fortunately I'd prepared pasta saltata on Wednesday night and made a double batch. Blossom dropped by and we all shared the pasta leftovers before an early night.
This morning Mr E and I rose at dawn,  as with four days out of the last eight away on the road, we knew we'd both be playing catch up with our work.
But he's a sweetie, and before we got stuck into our various chores and work needs, he drove me down to the beach in Luigi for an early morning coffee.
Home again and while Mr E did his thing, I decided to clean house before getting on with my magazine!
Two bathrooms scrubbed down, two fridges stripped out and scrubbed, the laundry pulled apart and scrubbed, floors vacuumed...and then a simple but hearty bacon, egg and tomato lunch because our friend Trev had dropped by earlier so Mr E could check his car engine, and he blessed us with freshly laid eggs from his chooks.
After lunch I hung up all the washing, wrote a grocery list, and headed out to the supermarket. An hour later I was home unpacking everything when I decided to surprise Mr E with his favourite cookies, Oatmeal & Raisin. As I've shared recently, we have cut our sugar use down by 50% and I'm playing with recipes to see how well they turn out with less sugar.
These cookies were yum!

Our coffee machine supplied the cappuccinos, so we enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea together...

A present to self : when I was shopping I found these roses and carnations reduced for quick sale...

I don't know about you, but I have a wonderful sense of joyful satisfaction after days like this. I am so blessed.

Tonight it's lamb cutlets and salad for dinner, with fresh berries and vanilla yoghurt for dessert. And maybe, just maybe, another drive to the beach in Luigi before bed...

Enjoy your weekend,
hugs

Sweet stuff!

Honestly, some of my friends are too clever for words! Like Helen, from Bustle & Sew.
She shared the MOST gorgeous springtime bunny wreath on her blog last week, and if you haven't visited Helen before, grab a coffee, a comfy chair, your laptop, and a spare hour or so. You'll be so inspired after your visit.
Check out her free pattern HERE.

If you've been a follower of my blog for a while you'll remember that my word for 2013 is 'adventure'.
Well, guess what my friend Allie found online for me?
A free BOM called ADVENTURE!
Blocks 1 and 2 are already up on Pretty P & Mama B Designs blog...
Visit their blog HERE to follow the BOM.
I have some beige linen patiently waiting for a purpose - I think I found it!

A quilt that has been on my to-do list for ages is this Granny Square Quilt by Jolene of Blue Elephant Stitches...

She has just shared the step by step tutorial at Moda Bake Shop!
You can make your own using her simple instructions HERE.

This week Mr E is away on a business trip, so my plan was to get some deep cleaning done. Even though we only moved into this house 7 weeks ago, things have accumulated, and dust has settled too comfortably.
Today I am going to work through the kitchen, and tomorrow I am going to use 29 steps from THIS guide from 'Time Warp Wife' to give our bedroom a deep clean...

I am also going to make some things for my linen cupboard, to help keep it organised and fresh.
Keep watching my blog because I'll share the ideas with you next week.

I used to keep laminated lists for deep cleaning each room in the house, but haven't used them for years. I might dig them out and get a regular routine happening.
Do you have cleaning lists too?
