Last year I shared a step by step tutorial for making a rectangular 'windowed' pin cushion. I shan't repeat those steps as you will find them HERE, but I will show you the changes I made with this one.
The stitchery used last year was on old one that had long languished in my UFO box, but this time I've made a second version of one of my Stitchery Club designs for July. The first version featured in my Hussif recently as the pocket for a pair of snips...
...whereas the second has the scissor handles embroidered in place.
(Club members: you will receive this pattern and need only omit the handles if you're making a scissor scabbard)
I chose a Lecien 'Basics' charm square as the background fabric...
...and an 8 inch square of Lecien's 'Flower Sugar' in faux hexie floral to create the window effect.
Instead of hand sewing around the window with running stitch as I did with last year's pin cushion I chose to secure the window by machine this time, stitching about an eighth of an inch from the inside edge.
You need to secure the window over the embroidered block with plenty of pins before you sew...
Simple running stitch quilting accentuated the hexies...
Last year's was filled with crushed walnut shells as it was a bit smaller. This one however was stuffed with polyester toy filling. You could use either, depending on the size of the pincushion you make.
I'm rather pleased with how this turned out.
Is it just me, or do you think it's fun to have baskets of pincushions and needle-books in your home, too?
hugs

As always, love the colors and fabric. Can't wait to get July's designs. I am going to need some smaller handwork items to work on while I recover from having total knee replacement surgery. Needle books and pin cushions may be just the thing. Those cranberry orange muffins from yesterday are absolutely scrumptious looking. Going to check your recipes for them. I am glad to know someone else in this world still irons clothes. Love your blog. I check for posts everyday.
Yet another wonderful project. Thank you so much.
Oh I am in love with this pincushion...as I am with all of your projects dear. Thank you once again for sharing your tutorial with us. I am thinking I can make one of these. Your fabric selections are always so delicious! Blessings...
I guess I must agree with you. I don't have baskets, but I have a ton of pincushions, and can't seem to stop getting more! I really, REALLY like this one, and so I'll have to make it. Before I even read it, I saved it with print friendly. LOL I like the way your posts come out exactly the same on print friendly. On some blogs, the pictures are all down the right side and the words on the left, and the ideas get lost that way. Do you do anything special to make that happen?
Such a sweet lovely pin cushion.. with love Janice
That is stunning, Jenny-girl! I've not attempted that technique yet. Love the background fabric on this one. The whole thing just makes me think of a stitching cottage on the beach....
love the pretty colours, very nice!
i made a simple pin cushion many years ago, i used sheared wool in it & my pins never rusted
will have to go look for it.
mmm, might have another go at making a pin cushion, something a little harder than rectangle sewn together, would make great gifts.
lovely post & tutorial
thanx for sharing

That is such a sweet pattern. You never seem to run out of ideas. I have heaps of pincushion on display. I have been overseas fo the past month and look forward to catching up with your blogging.
You can't have too many pincushions! Very pretty Jenny. xx
I agree with Lin - you can never have enough pincushions and needle keeps! Thank you so much for the tutorial....
Jenny your project is wonderful! I really enjoyed the tutorial and think I will try this one very soon. Thanks for sharing your wonderful project, tutorial and love of embroidery. Have a great day!
What a beautiful pincushion Jenny! Thank you for sharing the tutorial! :) x
Your pin cushion is beautiful, Jenny. I like the idea of filling a basket with pin cushions. I have quite a few little cushions and I think I may even have a basket somewhere. I'm going to look for it and fill it up with my pin cushions. xx
Beautiful Jenny. Love the hexi's
I absolutely LOVE pincushions and think you can never have too many. I have them scattered all over the house and still can't always find one when I need it. That means the pin or needle goes into the upper left corner of my shirt. Hopefully, I remember to take it out before changing into my pajamas at night. Maybe I need to make a pincushion to put in my bathroom. Hmmmmmm...
